Cute Cats….

Yeah, I’m making fun of the 10,000 vids of cats doing stuff on youtube. Your cat is no cuter than any other cat. And if you think about it, they’re not really that cute at all. You say playing. They say practicing to capture and kill dinner. ^^ Enjoy.

My landscape.  I wanted to explore the idea of the human body as a landscape…..and then my search for content descended into madness.  Enjoy.

Words

I found some interesting text on a forum.  Felt like saving it, so it’s going up here.

I fight like a girl—
I fight like a girl who refuses to be a victim; a girl who’s tired of being ignored and humored and beaten and raped; a girl who’s sick of not being taken seriously. I fight like a girl who’s been pushed too far; a girl who offers and demands respect; a girl who has a lifetime of anger and strength and pride pent up in her girly body. I fight like a girl who doesn’t believe in fear and submission; a girl who knows that this body and this mind are mine; a girl who knows you only have as much power as I grant you. I fight like a girl who will never allow you to take more than I offer… a girl who fights back.

[To Men] There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works. [To Women] Love is grand, divorce is a hundred grand. [To Everyone] Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either. Leave me alone. [To the Clan Members] Don’t be irreplaceable. If you can’t be replaced, you can’t be promoted. [To High Level Players Who Dislike Noobs] Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines. [To Myself] Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it.[To The Dead] It is hard to understand how a cemetery raised its burial cost and blamed it on the cost of living. Finally [To Us Noobs] Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, professionals built the Titanic.

Kotowaza

If you know Japanese, and have studied Japanese sayings (kotowaza) then you’ll know that the large text on this poster is a kotowaza.  It’s to let people know that if they don’t conform on their own, society will put them in line.  Sad, but true, individualizm is not looked upon well there.  So, when I decided to make a poster about religious freedom and parents basically railroading their kids into whatever faith they happen to follow, I had no idea what to do.  It wasn’t until I found this picture, instantly thought of that  quote, and put it towards the individual parent (not society) that this concept was born.  It’s a simple, strong visual.  No offence meant towards any religion, but there can’t be faith without doubt first, so I don’t like the idea that many children are raised on it and never given the chance to think about it.  It’s just assumed that they’ll follow it until they die, never questioning it.

Reading response 2

I’ve read to page 93. I’m getting there.

And onwards…

Digital art has affected our culture to its very core. Can you manage without the internet? Not as a student, that’s for sure. Our generation has been exposed to computers and the internet for most our lives. The younger generations are being raised on them. Why not? They are powerful tools for learning and recreation. They can be used for class information, for research, for talking amongst the students and with the teacher. Just as easily, anyone can go to youtube and watch whatever they want. So how has this powerful medium affected art?

There are now even more tools for the creation of art. Artists can now create a piece entirely on the computer. Christine Paul gave several examples of how computers can be brought into the creation of more traditional art forms. At the planning, like artist Chris Finley, or the execution, like artist Joseph Nechvatal. The final example, the minutres by Karin Sander, never saw her hand. This pushes artists to seek concepts more than execution in themselves. I’m sure there are any number of artists (like me) who have little to no skill at drawing and painting, or any of the ‘traditional’ fine arts. With computers, our concepts can also be brought to life as sure as if we had drawn them.

As for its affect on our culture at large, anyone can mess around in MS Paint. There are people, who never have and never will think of themselves as being artist, who can be creative on their computer. Which is a tool they got for the more serious side of their life. Where I see this the most, as a photographer, is digital cameras. Everyone’s got them it seems. People with 35mm (especially if it isn’t SLR) get funny looks from people with their camera phones and cameras the size of credit cards. The general populous can can take nice quality pictures rather easily.

And then what? They post them on the internet for their friends and family. Facebook has become a gallery of people’s parties. Photobucket, Imageshack, Flickr among others give anyone a place on the net to host their pictures. Plus side, more room and opportunity for creativity. Down side, a lack of interest in the artists themselves. The way art moves around the internet, little thought is given to ideas like copyright. (Thus the nifty link we were given at the start of the semester.)

Advertising and corporations in general I see this far too much. For example, I was down at Park Meadows a few weeks ago. They’re still doing construction of the newest part, the Vistas (I think it’s called). The already open shops don’t want that ugly construction seen, so there’s a barrier with a pretty picture and some text. I loved the illustration they used on that. Is there any way for me to find out the artist? Not likely. (If anyone knows, please do tell.) Advertising, same thing. They paid the artist. Isn’t that enough?
